Traveling in Frankfurt with a Rental Car

The city of Frankfurt is one of the most important financial and economic centers of Europe, and a chosen destination for millions of travelers who come to the city each year for tourism or business.

Leaving the airport by rental car is the beginning of a dizzying tour through this modern city known as Main-hattan because of it’s gigantic skyscrapers along the banks of the Main river, some of the tallest in all of Europe. Speaking of skyscrapers, there’s nothing better than to take the 27 elevators up Main Tower and travel past the 56 floors at 11 miles per hour to arrive to the viewing area 650 feet above the city for a magnificent panoramic view.

Those who enjoy art can program the GPS in their rental car to the address Domstrasse 10 and drive to the Museum of Modern Art. The Museum für Moderne Kunste is another principal attraction of the city. Known as the ‘slice of cake’because of it’s triangular shape, this museum designed by Viennese architect Hans Hollein is distinguished for having an important collection of pop art by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Works by other renowned post war artists such as Joseph Beuys and Claes Oldenburg are displayed here as well.

Another point of interest worth visiting is Römerberg, the plaza at the heart of the historic center of Frankfurt, home to the first markets and fairs of the city in the 13th century. Here is located the old Church of Saint Nicholas (Nikolaikirche) and the Town Hall Building, inaugurated in 1405 where many German emperors were crowned. From November 26 to December 22 the Römerberg hosts the Christmas Market of Frankfurt.

Grosser Hirshgraben 23 is the birthplace and home of Goethe during his youth. This museum house had to be reconstructed after the war and now exhibits the space and objects belonging to this great German poet, dramatist, and scientist who founded Romanticism.

Drive your rental car to 25 Senckenberganlage to see the Senckenberg Natural History Museum or Senckenberg Nature Museum with it’s huge exhibit of dinosaur skeletons, bird replicas, and now extinct animal replicas. Senckenberg museum is one of the most important in Germany.

Those who want to finish up their trip with some shopping can wander along Zeil, one of the main commercial streets of the city, known as the “Fifth Avenue of Germany”. Here you’ll find fashion stores and the “Zeil Gallery” a modern 10 story mall that has all the main department stores.
