Visiting Miami Auto Museum, Dezer Collection
The Miami Auto Museum is located near Biscayne Blvd in North Miami, 4 miles (8 km) northwest of Miami Beach. Covering 25 thousand square feet, it’s home to 1000 autos distributed throughout 8 galleries in 2 huge buildings.
The Dezer collection of the Miami Auto Museum owes it’s name to Michael Dezer, a real estate agent who began to collect vehicles as an adolescent. Today his collection also includes motorcycles (he has one of the largest collections of Vespa scooters in the world) as well as helicopters, planes, and submarines.
The Miami Auto Museum exhibits all types of automobiles: classics, military, and electric. But of course the most popular are those exhibited in the “Hollywood Cars of the Stars” gallery. Here you can see around 80 cars that were shown in movies and television programs from every era, from: The Dukes of Hazzard, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, Starsky & Hutch, The Munsters, y films como The Great Race, Back to the Future, Grease, Harry Potter, and Ghostbusters.
Visitors to the museum can marvel at the Mitsubishi Eclipse from the film Fast and Furious, the BMW motorcycle from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the Batmobile and Batboat used in the 1960’s television series of Batman, the Ford ‘Grease Lightning’ from Grease, the Cadillac ‘Ecto-1’ from Ghostbusters, the Delorean time machine from Back to the Future, the Mach 5 from Speed Racer Enterprises, and the Ferarri from Miami Vice, among others.
The museum also has the largest collection of items related to the James Bond films. This exhibit is shown in an enormous crystal enclosure and includes books figures, and toy cars. But of course the star of the collection is the Aston Martin sports car that Sean Connery drove in the 1964 film "Goldfinger". Another vehicle from the saga that the Auto Museum exhibits is the boat that appears in "From Russia with Love", released in 1963.
The Miami Auto Museum also offers a tour through a century of history, including 100 auto makers and models that left their mark on the world.
The museum entrance fee is $25 dollars for adults and $10 for children under 12 to see just one of the buildings, or $40 and $10 to see the whole collection. Children under 10 years old enter free. The Miami Auto Museum is open Monday through Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
