The city of São Paulo is located in the south of Brazil and with an area of 154,000 square miles. It’s the most populated city in all of the Americas and the 4th most populated city on the planet.

Around 42 million travelers from all over the world arrive there through the São Paulo Airport - Guarulhos which is located 18 miles from the city. San Pablo is a cosmopolitan city with modern architecture alongside a rich cultural of art and design, and a nightlife comparable to other capital cities of the world.

To begin to experience the contagious energy of the city, nothing is better than renting a car and taking a tour along Avenida Paulista. Inaugurated in 1891, it’s the financial and cultural epicenter of the city. Starting in the Plaza Oswaldo Cruz, it extends 1.8 miles and is filled with banks, shops, hotels, consulates, restaurants, museums, and parks. Here we find Trianon Park, the Art Museum of São Paulo (MASP), the Casa de Rosas, and the Fiesp Ruth Cardoso Cultural Center.

It’s also worth visiting Ibirapuera Park, the lungs of the city, created by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Located in the Moema neighborhood, here you can bike, walk, or do all sorts of outdoor activities. The Contemporary Art Museum of the University of São Paulo (MAC), The Modern Art Museum (MAM), the Japanese Garden, and the Ibiripuera Auditorium are all located in the park. It’s also the home of the Bienal de Artes of São Paulo.

From here you can drive your rented car to the Mercadao, the principal market, opened in 1933, which is visited by more than 35 million people every weekend who come to by tropical fruits, meat, fish, beans, sea food, and dairy products. This market full of flavors and aromas is known by the most important chefs for the great quality of products it offers.

Another obligatory stop in the city is the Oriental neighborhood of Liberdade, the biggest Japanese community outside of Japan. It occupies about 20 blocks full of sushi restaurants and traditional shops and hosts festivals such as the Flower Festival or the Festival of the Stars.

And if you continue to follow recommendations of those who know the city, you’ll arrive to the street Oscar Freire, located in one of the most expensive areas know as Jardins (Gardens), home to the most elegant restaurants, shops carrying the most prestigious brands, and where Fashion Week is hosted each year.

Those who can’t leave São Paulo without visiting the beach have the option to drive their rental car just 54 miles to Guaruja with it’s urban beaches: Pitangueiras and Asturias. Further north is the Praia de Enseada, and just to the south of Pitangueiras are the beaches of Guaiúba and Pernambuco.
