About Budget

Budget Car Rental was started in Los Angeles California in 1958 and was a family run car rental service, with the central idea to be affordable for its clients. Because of this, in its first years its strategy was to locate outside airports, which allowed them to rent cars for US$4 per day and 4 cents per mile.

In 1986 Gibbons, Green, and Amerongen Ltd acquired Budget and the following year it went public with an initial offer of 3.2 million dollars.

In 1997 Budget was bought by Team Rental Group, and changed it’s name to Budget Group, Inc. That same year Budget was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1998 Budget presented Fastbreak, its express service with non-paper transactions. That year they also acquired Ryder TRS, Inc and together with Budget Truck Rental formed Budget Truck Group.

In 2002, Budget Group integrated the 2 businesses, Ryder TRS, Inc and Budget Truck Rental under the brand Budget Truck Rental and began to provide truck rental service.

The business great sustainably through the years until in November of 2002 Cendant Inc acquired the operation of BudgetRent a Car and its franchises in the USA, the Caribbean, Australia, and New Zealand.

In March of 2003, Avis Budget EMEA Ltd stopped buying shares in Budget Rent a Car, including the rights to the brand name Budget in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Budget then became known as Zodiac Europe Ltd and moved its headquarters to Braknell, Berkshire, England.

In 2006 Cendant Inc divided into 4 independent companies, Realogy, Wyndham Worldwide, Travelport, and Avis Budget Group. Budget Rent a Car became an affiliate of Avis Budget Group.

In 2011 Avis Budget Group became the first rental car company to rent smoke-free cars through its brands Avis Rent a Car and Budget Rent a Car in the United States and Canada. That same year Avis Budget Group acquired Avis Europe and created 3 operating regions: North America and Europe, The Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Latin America/Asia.

In 2012 Avis Budget Group acquired Apes Car Rental in New Zealand.

In 2013 Avis Budget Group acquired Zipcar, world leader of car-sharing. That year they also bought Payless Car Rental.

In 2014 Avis Budget Group began to directly operate the brand Budget Car Rental in Portugal.
