Visiting the Sixth Floor Museum

 

The city of Dallas, situated in the northeast of the state of Texas in the United States, receives around 61 million visitors per year through Dallas International Airport. Some of them continue on to other destinations but many of them stay to explore this modern city with excellent tourist attractions.

One of the most impressive of these attractions, without a doubt, is the Sixth Floor Museum, located in the historic West End District, in Dealey Plaza. This is not your typical museum. What’s it all about? On November 22, 1963, from one of the windows from the sixth floor of this building, Lee Harvey Oswald fired the gin that ended the life of a president of the United States, John F. Kennedy.

Today the sixth and seventh floors, which in 1963 were book depositories for the school administration building, have been converted into a permanent exhibition space with photographs, documentaries, objects, and evidence that tells the story of the life and death of President Kennedy.

Here you can look through the window through which Oswald shot Kennedy. The space has been recreated with boxes of books as it was at the moment Oswald used his weapon. You can also see a collection of 5,500 photographic negatives, property of the Dallas Times Herald, that document the moment of the act and the investigation realized in the days following the assassination.

The museum also has a collection of around 45,000 articles related to the incident including audio and video clips, photographs and archives from the time period.

According to those responsible for it’s existence, the goal of the Sixth Floor Museum is to tell the story of the murder as precisely as possible without skipping over the controversial parts.

The museum offers audioguides in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and Japanese.

It’s important to mention that photographs may not be taken in the exhibition rooms because the images are copyrighted.

How to arrive to the Sixth Floor Museum by rental car

The Sixth Floor Museum is located at 411 Elm Street in the West End District in the center of Dallas.

From the north of the city you must take your rental car along I-35 south and exit on Continental Street. From the south you drive your rental car along I-35 north and again exit at Continental Street. In either case you’ll them turn right on Houston Street. The museum is on the right.

From the west of the city you’ll take your rental car along I-30 east to I-35 north. From the east you can drive your rental car along I-30 east to I-35 north. Either way you’ll later take the exit for Continental Street and turn right at the light. Then drive 2 blocks along Houston Street and turn right at the second light. Continue south and turn right into the parking lot of the museum, just past the train tracks.
